Sightseeing

Sightseeing is an obvious activity while in the Langhe given the many medieval hill top towns within a short drive from Barolo. Some of my favourites include Monforte d'Alba (charming piazza), La Morra (best view of valley), Serralunga d'Alba (pretty castle), Diano d'Alba (quaint with stunning views) and Grinzane Cavour (imposing/impressive castle). At Grinzane Cavour, I recommend touring the castle and then spending some time in the enoteca that stocks a vast selection of the region's best vintners. Don't miss out though on taking a coffee/aperitif in the bar at the castle......the view is framed beautifully through the large window.
Alba

Alba

The Saturday morning market in Alba is also a favourite of mine, but don't get there too late as all the stalls are packed up by midday. There is a huge covered food market area that sells fruit / veg / poultry / meats / cheese / olives / flowers etc. From my experience, the vendors are happy to let you sample some of their local cheese to aid in your decision as many of the cheeses might be new to you as local to the area. As with all Italian village markets, there are numerous stalls that sells clothes, homeware etc.
Hiking/hill walks

Hiking/hill walks

From the tower, you can easily set off on three trails (sentieri) that will take you through towns and vineyards. As many of the trails cut through and over the vineyards, we recommend sturdy footwear and an average level of fitness. These trails can take you in the direction of either Monforte d'Alba, La Morra or Castiglione Falletto. The shortest one is to hike to Monforte d'Alba (40mins) and then you can enjoy a lunch in the pretty town square before heading back to Barolo.

Wine tasting

Each winery has its own policies and hours. I recommend you contact the winery directly. However, one easy suggestion is the Marchesi dei Barolo, as it is only a 5min walk from TorreBarolo. They provide tours and tastings. This site is useful as a directory for all the winemakers in the area: Piemonte on Wine

Events

The region of the Langhe/Roero produces an abundance of tourist information in English, German and Italian. There is a fantastic tourist office in the center of Alba at the Duomo square or check out their website below. Often in the tower we have an updated calendar of events. If one is not in the basket in the living room, you can easily pick one up in any enoteca or restaurant in town. See the following site for listing of upcoming events in the area visit: Langhe and Roero
